Oily skin is one of the four skin types which has its challenges. It is prone to blackheads and whiteheads as well as acne.
Although oily skin poses some problems, having one is still manageable. Skincare experts share some necessary steps to maintain clean and greasy free skin.
Cleansing your skin should be in the top list of your skincare routine.
Dr. Sandra Lee, aka Dr. Pimple Popper, founder of SLMD Skincare, explains that people with oily skin need to thoroughly cleanse their faces in the morning even though they have cleaned it the night before.
She adds that during the night shedding of skin cells and the production of oil still happens, so she recommends cleansing in the morning and night time.
Lee shares that she uses a cleanser containing salicylic acid because it helps remove excess oil and shredded skin that might clog the pores.
After cleansing, Lee recommends using an exfoliating toner that has ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid.
Treating your skin
Oily skins are prone to acne, so Lee suggests using benzoyl peroxide during the day to keep in check oil production and stop breakouts. At night time, Lee adds that you can use a product with retinol that can unclog pores and give you a glowing skin.
Some commercially available retinol products include Cerave Resurfacing Retinol Serum, Paula’s Choice 1% Retinol Booster and Roc Retinol Correxion Night Cream.
If you have oily skin, moisturizers should be a must.
“There is some belief that if you have oily skin, you don’t need or shouldn’t moisturize,” Lee says. “All skin types need moisturizer, but if you have oily skin, you should be more careful with what kind of moisturizer you are using.”
She recommends a moisturizer that is water-based, lightweight, and free of oils.
Additional Skin Care Routine
- Apply sunscreen.
Remember to put on sunscreen every time you go outdoors. It is best to wear those that have at least an SPF 30.
Founder of Mudgil Dermatology in New York, Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, recommends using a sunscreen that has anti-acne ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium.
Or you can use a daily moisturizer with a sunscreen component to keep you covered all the time.
- Make use of blotting papers.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) approves the use of blotting papers to control oil throughout the day.
- Cleansing after exercise
It is AAD recommended to cleanse your face after exercise, apart from your daily morning and night cleansing schedule.
During exercise, oil, sweat, and dirt have built up, and washing your face right after a workout will remove all of these.
- Choose the best options.
Anything that you put in your face should be thought of carefully.
“Avoid any products with alcohol, which can cause a paradoxical increased amount of oil secretion. Also, avoid anything thick and greasy, like cocoa butter, shea butter, and Vaseline,” Mudgil says.
People with oily skin should not be troubled because there are ways for them to have that healthy and glowing skin still. They need to make it a habit to follow their day-to-day skincare regimen.
