Home remedies to soothe and heal sunburns

Apple cider vinegar

Having antifungal and antiseptic properties makes this a great remedy for burns and rashes and can also be used to detoxify your skin. Use a cotton ball or directly dab a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar on your sunburn. It also helps restore your pH levels and rehydrate the skin.

Milk soak

You don’t need a whole basin or bathtub full of milk, soaking a washcloth in a bowl of it to lay on your sunburn is enough to soothe the skin and lessen sensitivity. Francesca Fusco, MD of Wexler Dermatology in New York City that this works because of milk’s cool temperature, pH, and fat.

Cold Petroleum Jelly

To help speed up healing and to reduce pain, it’s key to keep your skin moisturized and well hydrated. Stick some Vaseline in the fridge for a few minutes before applying. This will help rebuild your skin barrier and the cold will soothe the burn.

Honey can be used as a natural salve, instead of antibiotic creams, to boost healing, soothe sunburn pain, and reduce infection.

Oatmeal bath

Sunburns have the side effect of becoming itchy. A lukewarm bath can help ease the itch and soothe the burn too. For an oatmeal bath, mix one cup or more of finely ground oats to your bath water and soak your body for around 15-20 minutes. Ranella Hirsch, MD, a dermatologist from Boston, says oatmeal is a humectant- it has anti-inflammation compounds and helps moisturize skin.

Baking soda bath

Soaking is a great way to treat sunburns by moisturizing your skin and boost healing. Using baking soda does a good job of easing the sunburn itch and reducing inflammation. Soak in a tepid bath mixed with 1-2 cups of baking soda until the water cools.

Teabag patches

Jessica Krant, MD, a dermatologist in New York City, says that tea can help the skin feel better and heal faster. It’s an old-fashioned poultice that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. You can chill some chamomile tea and use a towel compress to apply it to your burn or use the tea bags directly.

Make your own topical cream

You can use a paste made of a tablespoon of cool water and an aspirin. This can be used on isolated areas like a finger or your lips. Let it sit on the area for about five minutes before rinsing it off.

Cucumber paste

Take two cucumbers, chill, then blend to make a raw paste. Apply this to areas of your skin affected by sunburn to soothe pain and boost healing. This works because of cucumber’s anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, as well as providing a source of natural antioxidants.


Plain Greek yogurt can be used to cool a sunburn and provide hydration for your skin when you apply it topically. Yogurt is also antibacterial and can help keep in infections from developing in areas you end up scratching.

Vitamin E capsules

Break open a few vitamin E supplements and slather the contents on your sunburn. UV rays that produce free radicals in your body are responsible for the pain of a sunburn. Free radicals steal electrons from healthy molecules. To prevent this from happening, vitamin E provides an alternate source of electrons instead of your body’s healthy molecules.
