Irritation and allergic reactions could be difficult to deal with. Doctors prescribe creams, lotions, or antihistamines for relief, but knowing the appropriate home remedies for allergic skin reactions is important.

Here are eight home remedies for allergic skin reactions that can help you.

1. Cold Compress

This method is best used to suppress sensations that come with allergic reactions on the skin. These allergic reactions usually show up as red, itchy rashes on the surface of the skin. Applying a cold compress or cold water on the targeted area can bring immediate relief from itching and inflammation. The cold temperature offers a numbing effect, reduces swelling, and controls the pain.

2. Oatmeal Bath

Oatmeal in suspension (colloidal oatmeal) shows potential as treatments for rashes, said Dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, President of Skincare Doctors in Boston.

“Add a cup or two to your bath to relieve eczema and psoriasis, but make sure to stick with lukewarm water, as hot water can exacerbate the underlying conditions,” she recommends.  

3. Baking Soda

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is used to soothe inflamed skin and reduce irritation. There is limited scientific research that proves this particular hypothesis, but this home remedy is worth the shot.

Dr. Hirsch recommends mixing baking soda with water to make a paste and apply it directly to the targeted area. Alternatively, adding 1/4 cup of baking soda into a lukewarm bathwater before soaking may help reduce symptoms.

She explains that “baking soda is purported to be an anti-fungal, and can help sooth elements of itch that they cause.”

4. Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion is a medication used to treat itchiness, leaving a soothing, cooling sensation on your skin. This medication is also effective in drying out skin irritation. Calamine lotion are over-the-counter medications, but patients are advised to check with their doctor before application, especially in using calamine lotion on a baby or an elderly person.

5. Humidifier

Dermatologists recommend using a humidifier for people suffering from dry skin. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, Dr. Kantor said. This prevents atopic dermatitis or eczema. The doctor explains that these skin conditions are not common in areas with elevated humidity levels. Dr. Hirsch added that patients should put “humidifiers in rooms where they spend lots of time, such as your bedroom or cubicle at work.”

6. Moisturizer

Moisturizing leads to decreased chances of skin problems. Dermatologists recommend moisturizers with ceramides and free of fragrance and parabens. Ceramides locks in moisture after application. Also, for better dermal absorption, patients should keep their skin covered after application. For instance, patients are advised to put on socks after applying moisturizer unto their feet.

7. Hydrocortisone Cream

According to the National Eczema Association (NEA), over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream helps relieve redness, itching, swelling, or other discomforts from skin conditions. Hydrocortisone creams contain milder steroids that could cause side effects if used without recommendations from doctors. Dr. Kantor said that this is called tachyphylaxis, and this is possible with topical steroid use.

“The more you use a steroid, the more the body gets used to it and needs a stronger steroid down the road to accomplish the same effect,” he explained.

8. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a centuries-old medication for skin conditions. Research shows that ACV is antiseptic and antimicrobial — meaning, its antimicrobial properties could prevent disease infection associated with skin conditions like eczema. The NEA recommends adding two cups of apple cider vinegar into lukewarm bathwater. Soaking for 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water could help re-balance the skin pH and improve the protective barrier of the skin.
