7 Unhealthy Morning Habits That Hinder Weight Loss

  • Unhealthy morning habits can derail your weight loss plan and hinder your goals.
  • Make sure to drink water first thing in the morning to jumpstart your metabolism.
  • Exercise before eating anything then have a high-caloric breakfast followed by lighter meals during the latter part of the day.

Starting the day hungry or stressed can affect your mood for the rest of the day and even hinder your weight loss goals, so it’s important to have a healthy morning routine.

If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at some common mistakes to avoid:

1. Not drinking water after waking up.

Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning to jumpstart your metabolism. A faster metabolism speeds up the body’s fat-burning and detoxification processes.

Author Chris Bailey shared how he decreased his body fat from 17% to 10% by drinking water upon waking up.

2. Not exercising before breakfast.

Exercising, especially before breakfast, has several benefits: it wakes you up, relieves stress, burns calories, increases metabolism, and decreases appetite.

According to an experiment conducted by a team of researchers, people who work out before breakfast consume fewer calories during the day. Exercising on an empty stomach was also found to be 20% more efficient in promoting weight loss compared to exercising at a later time.

Having breakfast first may cause you to eat more due to the stress of waking up — this will make it more difficult to exercise due to feeling full.

3. Not having a big breakfast.

According to scientists from the Tel Aviv University, having a big, high-calorie breakfast, a medium-sized lunch, and a light dinner is more effective for maintaining weight compared to having small, frequent meals throughout the day. They explained that the body’s metabolism is faster during the earlier part of the day.

4. Saving “cheat food” for later in the day.

If you tend to give in to cravings, it’s best to do this during the morning. Your body will be able to break that doughnut down throughout the rest of the day, as opposed to eating it at the latter part of the day when the body is preparing to rest.

5. Not getting enough sunlight.

A lack of exposure to sunlight can promote weight gain. Research found that sunlight actually helps reduce the size of lipids and white fat tissue. Spend a few minutes in the sunlight every morning, but don’t forget to apply sunscreen beforehand.

6. Reading the morning news.

Most news headlines these days can stress you out, so it’s good sense to avoid the news during the morning. Long-term stress can actually form fat cells as your body tries to save up calories to sustain you. Even “dieting” and exercising can be less efficient in helping you lose weight if you’re constantly stressed.

7. Passing up the opportunity to exercise with pets.

Make the most of your dog walks by running along and doing laps with them. Talk to your pets as you exercise at home. Pets are big mood boosters and motivators for you to get moving and enjoy doing it.
