Your diet can provide the nutrients your body needs for optimal health, but sometimes you need more. Here’s a list of supplements that heart doctors take to stay healthy.
1. Omega 3
These healthy fats are naturally found in fatty fish like mackerel, tuna, salmon, and sardines. Omega 3s help reduce inflammation that causes heart disease. A 2017 research published in
Circulation found that omega 3 helps lower the risk of dying from heart failure or heart attack.
Doctors also recommend these supplements for diabetes. Suzanne Steinbaum, DO, attending cardiologist and Mount Sinai Hospital’s director of Women’s Cardiovascular Prevention, Health, and Wellness, says the body does not produce omega 3s, so you have to get them from food. If you don’t eat fish often, Suzanne Steinbaum recommends getting your blood levels tested.
2. Vitamin D
The body produces vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. However, darker months and the sunscreen we wear may prevent vitamin D production, leading to numerous diseases and conditions, including heart disease. Dr. Steinbaum takes 2,000 international vitamin D units a day to ensure she meets the recommended daily vitamin D levels.
According to research published in the Journal of Nutrition, garlic may lower blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Cardiologist Matthew Budoff, a professor of Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, started taking two garlic pills a day since he was diagnosed with hypertension. Dr. Budoff has led multiple studies that demonstrated how the supplement reverses coronary plaque and lowers blood pressure. Fatty plaques in the coronary arteries indicate heart disease. He recommends it to anyone looking to treat their hypertension or early heart disease.
Biotin supplements are B vitamins that make the nails stronger. However, it may negatively affect the heart. The FDA warns that high doses of biotin supplements may interfere with common lab tests, including those needed to diagnose a heart attack.
Aging and wear and tear can take their toll on our joints and bones. This is why New York-based cardiologist Perry Frankel takes glucosamine supplements every day. He says the supplement is proven to benefit the joints and even works better than certain pain relievers. Dr. Frankel also says that glucosamine helps in forming new cartilage, which is why many doctors recommend it as an arthritis remedy.
6. Vitamin C
Dr. Frankel says vitamin C has been shown to boost the immune system, making it essential for healthcare workers. NYC Surgical Associates’ cardiovascular surgeon David A. Greuner also agrees. He explains that he takes vitamin C for its antioxidant effects, its overall effect on skin health and because he never eats enough fruits. According to a review study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, vitamin C deficiency may increase the mortality risk from heart disease. The study also suggests that taking vitamin C supplements may boost heart health, especially in vitamin C-deficient people.
